Monterey Cypress, watercolor by Elizabeth Kennen Pacific Grove is one of my very favorite places to visit. Since I was there recently, I've been reflecting on the charm and beauty of this amazing area of California. It's a wonderful place for a getaway, to relax and recharge. The first thing I want to do when I arrive, is walk the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. It's become a tradition. Arrive in Pacific Grove, have your walking shoes on and hit the trail. It's about one mile to walk from Lovers Point to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This stretch of the trail is so lovely and inspiring, and it's so familiar now, having returned many times. My watercolor "Monterey Cypress" is one of the paintings I've been inspired to create, as I take this pathway. The colors, textures, contrasts in this coastal setting really spoke to me. The rocks and ice plant, the shadows, and the cypress tree I found to be so interesting. I loved painting this in layers of watercolor with lots of detail. The Monterey Cypress may be my favorite tree. They are so grand. I'll have to keep coming back to paint them. As someone who love nature and loves to draw and paint, I pause to take in the beauty and appreciate it all.
When a certain place calls to you, and just being there brings instant happiness, it's good to listen. Pacific Grove is one of those places for me. As an artist, the inspiration I feel during each visit is pretty wonderful. Taking in the beauty and wonder, feeling the cool ocean air, listening to seabirds, watching the waves, it's just perfect. Taking this walk from Lovers Point to the Aquarium and back during April was pretty special. At Hopkins Marine Station near the aquarium, there's a little beach just for the harbor seals. It's lovely to see them resting on the sand or taking a dip in the water. This time there were moms with their pups, as it was pupping season! Writing about the harbor seals of Pacific Grove and painting them, this may need to be a post in the near future. Looking at my recent photos, I know I'll be starting some new paintings soon. I will love to try and capture how it felt to be right there. This time, there will be spring flowers in the composition. Walking the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail in every season is wonderful and inspiring, for nature lovers and for artists. This painting, Monterey Cypress, is available as a fine art print. It's part of my Monterey Bay collection, which I'm happy to say is growing. This is my new art shop. https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/1-elizabeth-kennen Information on the lovely town of Pacific Grove. https://www.seemonterey.com/regions/pacific-grove/
